“When I was a little girl, I used to make bolster pillows with my grandmother. She would sew the covers and I would stuff the pillows.”
Growing up in Malaysia, every child had a bolster pillow to cuddle with. A long rounded pillow lay on every bed sewn together by mothers and grandmothers. When I was a little girl, I used to make bolster pillows with my grandmother. She would sew the covers and I would stuff the pillows.
Going to bed at night was never a simple process for me, I constantly felt fearful and hated the dark. Having a bolster pillow to hold and squeeze gave me an extra boost of safety and made me feel a little braver. After immigrating to Canada though, I forgot all about our sleep custom.
It wasn’t until my daughter was born and my mother soon made my girl her very own little soft bolster. Although she didn’t use it until she was around 3 years old, seeing my daughter cuddle her bolster pillow to bed at night and still finding her leg and arm over it while she’s in deep sleep evoked wonderful memories from my childhood.
As the Founder and CEO of a very a unique sleep system, the ComponentBed, the subject of sleep is a focal point in my work but also very much at home with my family. What I know for sure is we each have individual sleep needs. Children especially need to practice good sleep habits. Finding gentle methods to aid in improving our quality of sleep can go a long way. There are so many reasons why children don’t get the sleep they need, while some are complex there are many that are manageable.
Launching the Bravery Bolster campaign is very close to my heart because it’s a simple solution that can give a child just a little more comfort and courage they need to sleep well. We hope to reach as many children as possible who could use an extra dose of bravery when they go to sleep at night. Please join us in giving a boost of courage to an already extraordinary child.
